MRS BURDEN & MISS DEAKE : OUR CLASSROOM

Welcome to Riccall Community Primary School Foundation Stage

Activities ideas to try at home...

Create an alphabet collage.
Give each letter of the alphabet a little space and find as many things as you can from around the house that begin with that sound.
Encourage the children to have a go at writing a label for the items they find particularly if it is a simple word they could sound out: praise all mark-making efforts to ensure it stays FUN!
Helping round the house
Think about talking about number wherever you can, perhaps they could help you count out the napkins (or the forks) for everyone. Ask questions such as: If one more person came how many napkins would we need then?
Santa’s thank you card
Encourage them to get of to a good start by writing a Thank you card to leave for Santa when he brings their present. Remind them that ‘to’ is one of their action words. Sound out words with them rather than writing the letters down for them to copy.
Christmas day place setting cards
Could the children make a place setting card for everyone coming for Christmas dinner? Words such as Mum and Dad and their name are amongst the words we have been practicing.
Computer fun
Look at websites such as Cbeebies for lots of online activities.
A letter from Santa
Write them a short and simple letter from Santa. That you can read and share together. Remember the more they see you read and write the more interested they will be in having a go themselves. For boys in particular, seeing an interested male is shown to have great repercussions.
Story time
Share the books the children got for Christmas, talk about concepts such as main character, order of events and openings. For example if it begins, ‘Once upon a time…’ do they know any other stories with this same start?
Shape hunt
Talk about shapes they see around the home, create a shape collage think about how many sides and corners shapes have. In reception we tend to focus first on the 2D shapes: Circle, triangle, square and rectangle. Then 3D ones such as Sphere, cube, cylinder and cuboid.
Letter formation
Write out the letters of the alphabet on a long strip of paper, can the children drive a toy car round the letters practicing the correct letter formation.
You could also do the same for number formation!

HAVE FUN!!!!
Make all activities short and sweet!
And don’t forget action words, sound cards and reading books!
